National Walk Ambassadors: The Roberts Family
Adrian is an outgoing, happy, affectionate, and energetic 18 year old with a notorious half-grin that predicts mischief.
Adrian, with his older brother Connor, his mom Joy and his dad Neil, as well as his Granny Shirley, Auntie Leanne, cousin Marron and, of course, his autism support dog, Brooks, form the family core of Adrian’s team and we have been a part of the Vancouver/Richmond Autism Speak Walk since its beginning in 2008.
Adrian was first diagnosed with autism at age 3 and it was very difficult for all of us. At that point, he had no language and his communication challenges led to frequent meltdowns. Sleep problems and epilepsy pushed all of us to our limits. Over the years, we built up support with a great behavioural consultant, great behavioural interventionists, resource teachers, SEAs and medical professionals, some great agencies as well as other special, caring individuals who got us through the tough times. It takes a different extended family to get through these issues and we are very grateful for the help we have received.
That is why, when the first Autism Speak Walk started in 2008, we were quick to join in and form Adrian’s Team - and have been back every year. As a family, we wanted to bring awareness, support and start a dialogue. Community understanding and acceptance go a long way in making the world better for everyone impacted by this disorder. We love the cause which has amazing free resources for individuals, families, schools and professions. We love the vision which looks to support adults as well as children with autism. We love the event which, each year, brings more awareness in the community, raises much needed funds and designs an inclusive event the whole family can enjoy.
Today Adrian attends high school, and he has some language capability. Although there are ups and downs, melt downs are a thing of the past. He is active in swimming, horseback riding, basketball, bowling, jumping on trampolines and loves riding the bus and skytrain.
He’s preparing for the transition from school into adult life and more adventures to come.
Adrian is honored to be the 2018 Vancouver/Richmond Autism Speak Walk Regional Ambassador. He looks forward to seeing you there this year!
