National Honorary Walk Ambassador: Addison
Addison is a 13 year old young man who is thoughtful, happy and joyous. He was diagnosed with autism when he was 3 ½ years old. After his diagnosis, Addison began intensive therapy for 2 hours a day, 5 days a week that was comprised of speech, occupational and behaviour therapy. The changes in Addison were amazing. He had always been a happy, easy-going child, but through therapy, his ability to communicate blossomed, highlighted by his reaction when his younger brother was diagnosed with autism. Addison gave him a hug and said in a joyful voice, "You have autism just like me." Addison has maintained B Honours in school and has found a fantastic group of friends who accept him just the way he is. He is currently in Grade 7 and enjoys competitive swimming, reading and of course, video games. He has faced different challenges over the years, but continues to amaze those around him by the determined way he faces these challenges. Addison dreams of being a pilot and traveling the world, and plans to begin his journey in Japan, so he can get Pokémon cards.
Addison is proud to have been involved with the Autism Speaks Canada Walk for the last few years and has even had the opportunity to speak at the Vancouver Walk on behalf of Toys”R”Us. As he emerges as a fantastic advocate for himself and his peers, he looks forward to his role as the 2017 National Walk Ambassador and using this opportunity to share his story and compassion with others.
The Walk includes fun activities, performers and snacks, before and after the Walk. Arrive early to give yourself lots of time to visit and enjoy the event with your family and friends!
