Welcome to Collin's story
Dear Family and Friends,
As you may or may not know, our son Collin has recently been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Collin is seven years old and in grade 2. He is an incredibly smart, loving, caring, sensitive boy who has a passion for birds. Ask him anything, he'll give you all the facts.
It has been a difficult journey leading up to Collin's diagnosis because outside of the home a person would see a typical child who loves to play with his younger brother Brody, play lego, read books etc.. They wouldn't see the daily meltdowns, the screaming, crying, anxiety, nervous tics due to something as simple as getting dressed or even something fun like going to the park to play.
This is why it has taken until age seven to get a diagnosis. As a parent you put the onus on yourself, wondering if there was something you've done wrong to create this behaviour. It wasn't until this school year when the stresses of grade 2 got to Collin that his behaviour rolled over into school and he couldn't cope. We were referred by his teacher to a social worker who brought to light that there was something much bigger going on with him.
I am so grateful for where our family stands right now with more knowledge and understanding of autism spectrum disorder. We are able to be better parents. We are walking to raise funds for the mission of Autism Speaks Canada - Increase understanding, acceptance and inclusion of people with autism spectrum disorder, advance innovative research, and make connections to lifelong services and supports for the autism community.
