Welcome to Suzanne's Personal Page
Dear Family and Friends,
On Sat, June 8, 2019, I will be walking to raise funds for Autism Speaks Canada. ASC is part of the world’s largest autism science and advocacy organizations dedicated to funding research into the causes, preventions and treatments for autism.
As many of you know, I am the proud mum to Alexander who was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at the age of 2. Alexander has made significant gains over the past 3 years thanks to a support system that includes family, friends, ABA therapists, clinical psychologists, school teachers and our local community. Many families are faced with the reality of finding their own ways to fund ABA therapy for their child, which can cost upwards of $80,000/year. Great things are done by a series of small things brought together. So this year, I will be walking to raise money to help families receive more support. Walk dollars also help train Early Childhood Educators, help newly diagnosed families navigate the health care system, and support young adults to learn skills to help them find jobs, just to name a few.
Here are some of the things that we’ve learned about autism in the last 10 years:
1. Autism can be reliably diagnosed by age 2.
2. High-quality early intervention is critical to developing lifelong skills.
3. One third of children and adults with autism are nonverbal.
4. Most adults with autism (84%) remain with their parents.
5. Over 80% of adults with autism are unemployed.
"If you've ever met a child with autism, you've met A child with autism" - ASD is a wide spectrum with every individual falling somewhere uniquely on that spectrum. Please support me by making a donation today and improve the lives of everyone living with autism.
Thank you for your support.
